Welcome to this blog!

Let me introduce myself: I am Nathalie Lauwen, born in 1975 and in 2024 I decided to finally follow my dreams and start my study to become an English teacher. Why now? Things finally alligned (more or less) and I figured that if I wouldn't do it now, I never would. I'm a strong believer of trying to live with no regrets, so I went for it. In September 2024 I started at Windesheim in Zwolle. By now, I can say that I've succesfully finished my first year and that I've received all credits. This first year hasn't been easy, but it has been fun. I've found that I enjoy working with the students at the internship even more than I thought I would, so that tells me I've made the right choice. An important part of the study is the Stay Abroad. The daytime students go abroad for 9 weeks in year 3. As a part-time student, I may 'cut it up' in several trips. The first part, will be a trip I've already made. So, that's why you'll first find some blogs about our 3-week-trip from 2022. We went back to the UK in 2023 for a week in London. That week may not be included (too many weeks from before I started my study), but we had great fun. This year (2025) we'll return to the UK for a 2 week vacation. During that vacation I'll start on some of the assignments that are part of the Stay Abroad. I look forward to it!

2025: 2 week UK road trip

This year we did go to the UK again. And yes, with the train again. I blogged as we went, but because I hadn't managed to get this blog up-to-date before we left, I blogged on Polarsteps. We were supposed to be nearly there, and we were supposed to travel directly from Amsterdam. An electrical problem in a railroad tunnel in Rotterdam changed all that. All earlier trains to London had been cancelled, but our train was not cancelled. That was, until we had just arrived in Amsterdam. Then we got the message that our train was cancelled as well. 8-6-2022: Glasgow

The hotel in Glasgow had amazing beds. That's why it was pretty painful that breakfast was from 7-8.45. It was worth getting up for though. Like in York there was a lot of choice, we could order and it would be delivered to our table.  At first we had planned to go to The Kelvingrove Museum and Art Gallery at opening time. But the weather prediction was pretty bad and it was raining cats and dogs at the time we would have left, so we decided to wait an hour (the rain would lessen after an hour). The prediction was correct, so an hour later we left for the museum. It has a lot of different things: from a dino skeleton to medieval things (mostly weapons) and paintings and art. A small impression: We went to the MacTassos streetfood cart for lunch. I'd read a tip online that their Greek food was absolutely amazing. Our plan for 2022: Epic UK Road Trip!

On Saturday 15th January 2022, we decided what we wanted to do when travel resumed. That year the girls were taking their school exams. After 5 years of bilingual and/or IB education, with a focus on the UK, the girls wanted to go to the UK instead of the USA (our previous plan). On their wishlist: London, 221b Baker Street, British Museum, see a musical (West End), Harry Potter Studios, Edinburgh, Glasgow, a ride on the Harry Potter train. Thus the idea for our Epic UK Road Trip came to be. We would leave after the last exams and we'd return around the time the results would be shared. So, passed or not, we'd hopefully have had an amazing trip!  Flying there and then renting a car might be the most logical choice, but driving on the left side of the road? That terrifies me. Waiting for hours on the airport before you can board the plane for a planeride of half an hour? Also not really our jam.
