31-5-2022: Oxford
We started our day with a hotel breakfast (our first hotel with breakfast included). Like the room, it was okay, but nothing special. Good enough for a night, but not worth a repeat. We travel from Bath to Oxford by train. Again, we were spoiled rotten. Ahhh, the good life! This time we would have a transfer. When we arrived at the station, the announcer was telling us where to go to catch the train to Oxford, perfect! We didn't have to figure it out ourselves.
Oxford is absolutely gorgeous. We loved it instantly and even better: instead of dropping off our luggage, we could check in 2 hours early, whoohoo! After a quick lunch, we joined the University Walking Tour I'd booked. What was promised:
- See architectural landmarks like Radcliffe Camera and Trinity College
- Learn about student life on a student-led guided tour
- Tour is wheelchair accessible and suitable for all ages
- Small-group tour ensures a personalized experience
Most of the promisses were fulfilled. We didn't get to see the Bodleian Library (only the door to it), but we did get lots and lots of stories about student life, about Tolkien and C.S. Lewis and lots of other alumni. Despite the dismal weather, we had a great time. The only downside: you end up on the other side of town, so it was quite a walk back. I was grateful there were enough fun shops to keep the girls motivated.
Some of the pictures I took during our walking tour (including scenes from Harry Potter and the door that inspired the Narnia Chronicles):
