29-5-2022: Salisbury
After checking out of our hotel in London, we took the train to Salisbury. Travelling with an Interrail Global Pass is relaxed, but not when you want to pass gates. The stupid QR code doesn't work if you want to scan it. The first time (when we were going to the Harry Potter Studios) we thought it was some kind of glitch, but it isn't. We'll have to ask someone to open the gate for us every single time. Luckily, most of the railroads-staff we come across are very friendly.
We hadn't really figured out yet where first class is in the train, so we just took seats in 2nd class. When we were almost at our destination, someone checked our tickets and explained to us we should have gone to the front of the train. We'd get nice things in first class like, coffee/tea/soda, cookies, chips (or crisps as the British call them). So, that would be worth checking out on our next train ride.
In Salisbury we couldn't check in yet, because the room wasn't ready yet. So we grabbed a longer late lunch in the pub of the hotel while we were waiting for check-in. After we could drop off our luggage in our room, we could finally take the Salisbury tour! I'd pre-booked our tickets, so we could just hop on the buss that would take us to Stonehenge. During the ride, we got a lot of information about Salisbury and interesting sights.
Stonehenge itself was very impressive, especially when you consider how long ago it was constructed. Those stones are absolutely huge. We walked all around it. There were a lot of people visiting, but it somehow still felt serene.
Sadly, we didn't have enough time left to also visit Old Sarum. I was somewhat disappointed, but our feet weren't hahaha. We did get to see parts of it from the bus.
On the way back, we got off the bus a bit early, because we'd seen a lot of activity in the city center. As part of the Jubilee celebration, there was something of a fair going on and there were some really lovely old cars on display.
